So, another New Year is upon us, and I think this is an ideal time to think about your goals and targets for the year ahead. I’ve written before about New Year’s resolutions, but I would like to reiterate how important I feel this practice is. Similar to many, I have found myself in the position of coming up with a brand new resolution at the last minute on New Year’s Eve, but these days I try to be more structured and give this a much greater priority.
Some goals may feel too big to achieve in a single year, but by breaking them down and creating a long-term plan, they become more attainable. For example, if your long-term goal is to buy a house or an additional property and this feels like a distant dream, slow down a little and take time to figure out what the steps might be in order for you to begin this journey.
In the past, I have had ideas that once seemed impossible, but as soon as I broke them down and looked at the numbers, they felt much more achievable.
With the possibility of purchasing a house, for instance, you would need to consider what you are actually looking for, the location and your price range, which will help you to focus your efforts on how to reach this particular goal. Quite often, this process in itself can spark some new ideas for getting there. As the saying goes, “A goal without a plan is just a wish.”1
