Getting your affairs in order: A gift to those you leave behind

Death is something many of us prefer not to think about, but planning ahead is one of the most thoughtful things we can do for our loved ones.

Following the recent loss of someone close to me, I saw first-hand the difference that having the right documents in place can make. It can provide peace of mind, ensure your wishes are followed, and reduce stress and financial difficulties for those left behind.

Lasting powers of attorney
Many people think a will is the first step in planning for the future. However, it is equally important to consider what would happen if you became unable to make decisions during your lifetime.

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) allows you to appoint someone you trust to make decisions on your behalf if you lose mental capacity. LPAs are not just for older people. Illness, accidents, or injury can affect anyone at any age, making them a vital part of financial planning.

The importance of having a will
A will is one of the most important legal documents you can have. It ensures your estate is distributed according to your wishes and identifies who will manage your affairs after your death.

Without a valid will, your estate is distributed under the rules of intestacy, which may not reflect your intentions.

From my own experience, having a will in place made things much easier. We were able to provide the will to the bank, which allowed funeral expenses to be paid directly from the deceased’s account, relieving some of the financial pressure on the family.

Final thoughts
None of us know what the future holds, but putting LPAs and a will in place can make a difficult time much easier for those we leave behind. They are acts of care and consideration that provide clarity, protection, and peace of mind.

If you’d like guidance on the importance of these arrangements as part of your overall financial planning, why not pick up the phone and start the conversation today? Taking action now can help you and your loved ones feel better prepared for whatever the future may bring.
